UNRELEASED LIVE COLLECTION , THE

studio tracks from 1970 to a live performance to 'The Lamb' from 1974. 'Stagnation'
is the rare 'Treasure Trove' version which features extra end lyrics

There's enough to make us all
feel good
Join with me, we'll share the
treasure trove
Seems to me like any other crowd.

HAPPY THE MAN
Contains material dating from BBC
studio tracks from 1970 to a live track from 'The Lamb' from 1974. The track
'Mary, Mary' has (more or less)been identified as being the work of an American
group called Genesis

BESIDES THE SILENT MIRROR
This recording contains the only
known live recording of 'The Light', there gas been a lot of discussion about
the exact date this gig was performed, the sleeve says 7th March 1971 but there
is some evidence to suggest other dates in 1971. The recording is far from perfect
but the atmosphere is all there, Peter talks in a halting French/English mix
and the stories are more or less intact, a real gem for collectors of the band.

(Small but appreciative audience
cheer and clap) PG: "Merci, bonsoir Madam, Monsieur, ah, ah [PG laughs]
(??) Francais (audience laugh), um, this is a number about a man who eats his
fingernails, I think, Happy The Man."
Music: Happy The Man (with alternate lyrics)
"PG: "This next one is about a man
who ate more cheese and onion potato crisps than any other man, this made him
exceeding-exceedingly fat, um, (PGlaughs) anyway he was paid a large amount
of money by the Smiths Crisp Company, and he used this to built an air raid
shelter beneath the ground, er, this he filled with onions to take away his
underarm odours, and also with tomato sauce in which he used to take his morning
bath (audience laughs). He lived in this (?) for five years and accumulated
a great deal of money, after five years he crawled up to the top again to discover
that the bomb had dropped (PG makes a bomb exploding noise) and all the little
people who had been running around before were lying flat on the ground. So
he went for a walk with his dog. This is called Stagnation and was written for
people with er bad breath.
Music: Stagnation
PG: "Merci. This next one is about a
light; a lumiere, from the left hand nostil, (de la may?) er, it is excreted
you know, [PG makes an excretion noise] out of his left nostril [audience laugh]
spreading germs all around. This is called the interlude. [the sound equipment
This is called, hopefully The Light. [quietly in the background you can hear
PG say to someone "This is it"] This is supposed to be er funny
so we hope you are enjoying it, er. La Lumiere. PC?: 1-2-3-4"

Phil: "Can you not do that?"
?:"But then I'm trying to keep a regular tempo"
Phil: "I know but if it naturaly falls to that
[it suggests that it's?] too fast at the moment, it might be at the same speed
now but it sounds horrible that fast!" ?: "Well
we've gotta get [something sorted] I think, before tempers flare"
Phil: "I agree" (others agree)
["It's no good going ?] like that"
(Phil plays a few beats) ["and sort of?] making
it out of time, lay back, you know, relax a bit, if it falls back into that
time let it do it. Alright, I, don't tell me it should be in that tempo, I

IN THE BEGINNING VOL.5

Note: this album has a lot of indistinct
talking included as well as count ins from the band (both of which I have not
timed) I will mention the bits that I can make out, but otherwise I will mark
the section with: [chat]
Track names are as listed on
back of CD sleeve, but track listing is corrected, and music is timed.

- 2. Drum Solo
Phil at his drumkit, no songs Genesis or otherwise are recognisable 3:04
- 3. Firth Of Fifth
(1) Instrumental Take, nice guitar (0:13-4:59) count in "1-2-3-4"
section leading up to guitar solo, not the same as remaster, band play up
to "leads his flock away" (no vocals) and stop 4:46 [chat, Phil can be heard
in background marking time and "da-da-ing" a piece seemingly at Steve who
plays what he hears]
- 3a.Firth Of Fifth
(2) Faster Version (5:16- 10:09) count in "1-2-3-4"
as above, another variation on solo, Tony plays lovely light ending 4:53 [chat]
- 3b.The Cinema Show
Rehearsal (10:19-11:06) count in "1-2-3-4"
[starts at equivalent of 5:23 on remaster] > after 0:47 [chat]
- 3c.After The Ordeal
Fast Version (11:22-15:39) wonderful complete fast alternate take, with glorious
electric guitar from Steve!!! 4:17
- 3d. Dancing With The
Moonlit Knight (1) Various Piano & Vocal Takes [includes next 2
tracks] (15:56-:17:42) Peter says "1-2, 1-2, 1"
Tony plays a piano note, then starts playing unfamiliar introduction, Peter
sings sad sounding nonsense lyrics to song > 1:46
- 4. Dancing With The
Moonlit Knight (0:03-2:16) as above (piano and vocal only) sudden
end > 2:13, after Peter suddenly says "O.K.! This
is it, I hope" and we go into the next take
- 4a. Dancing With The
Moonlit Knight (2:21-5:34) as above (piano and vocal only) but
with a lot more energy, it is apparent that Tony replays sections that Peter
does not get quite right without stopping the song, it gives an idea of how
well they worked together 3:13
- 4b. Dancing With The
Moonlit Knight (2) Vocals, Organ, Drums, Bass (5:43-7:19) count
in "3-4" nonsense lyrics, very punchy
interpretation, Peter really goes for it but band stop playing after 1:36
[chat]
- 5. Dancing With The
Moonlit Knight (3) Whole Ensemble [includes next track] (0:01-0:11)
delicate guitar intro but others fail to come in on time 0:10 [chat] "Sorry,
I thought [.....?], Try again"
- 5a. Dancing With The
Moonlit Knight (0:18-2:26) they try again, band come in at the
right time with a count in "3-4" this
sounds much as the album but the vocals are still nonsense, band stop after
2:18
- 6. The Battle Of Epping
Forest 5 Instrumental Rehearsal Takes (*note* some confusion over
which takes make up the five, I have taken it literally so the next four tracks
are included under this title, even though it makes little sense) (0:03-1:32)
count in "1-2-3-4" the marching introduction
into where vocals would be, band stop after 1:29
- 6a. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (1:34-7:18) continuing after above with count in "1-2-3-4"
(no vocals) through to "To save my steeple, ..." where it is quickly faded
out 5:44 [chat] Mike? says "Lets [try?] it, before
we start" and beats out a rhythm on a microphone while "da-la-ing"
the tune, then he says to Phil "Come on, lets try
it"
- 7. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (0:14-7:51) Phil drums what he hears then band join in,
no vocals, repeating theme on marching introducton, gets quite spirited, band
stop after 7:37 [chat] what caused the band to stop seems faintly ridiculous,
somebody seems to have wandered into the studio to ask for directions! Mike:
No, [it's in?] another, [room?] across the road,
[embarrased laugh from visitor] it's alright."
they pause then get back to business Mike: "There
is two kind of ways you can pull out of that bit, one is like, one is...."
>
- 7a. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (8:12-8:46) count in "1-2-1-2-3-4"
as above band stop after 0:34 [chat] Mike: ["?
now with that 4th time?] now the other one [....?"]

Forest (8:54-9:07) count in "1-2-3-4"
as above band stop after 0:13
- 7c. The Battle Of Epping
Forest Instrumental Rehearsal Takes (see note on track 6. includes
next 2 tracks) (9:08-10:49) count in "3-4"
as above, [chat] after band stop playing after 0:41 there are small bursts
of "clean" and distorted electric guitar and organ playing bits of song, and
chat
- 7d. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (12:34-13:03) count in "1-2-3-4"
as above but band seem to be experimenting with different "sound" 0:29 chat
after: ?: "Yeah might be one way of doing it"
[lots of chat, Mike says to someone a couple of times "you're
either with us or against us" somebody proposes alternate way to
do Epping Forest that "Sounds funny"
and thumps his fingers on the microphone to mark time while "da-da-ing" Tony
chips in and plays an extra gliss on the organ to same tune]
- 7e. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (?) (14:07-14:51) count in "1-2-3-4"
weird drum, bass and organ bit that may or may not have been rehearsed for
Epping Forest although there does not seem to be a recording break
between the preceeding chat and this track, could just be a jam session? >
0:44 [chat]
- 7f. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (no specific title since Peter sings on this track and also
track 8.and 8a. so they are not "Instrumental Rehearsal Takes) (15:01-15:30)
Peter is back singing nonsense 0:29 [lots of chat]
- 7g. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (16:19-16:24) count in "3-4"

Forest (16:32-16:40) count in "2-3-4"
quick burst 0:08 [chat]
- 8. The Battle Of Epping
Forest (0:08-1:21) count in "1-2-3-4"
fun with nonsense lyrics 1:13, after band chat and experiment with the ending
of a bass part, then Mike? says "Start again"
- 8a.The Battle Of Epping
Forest (2:31-4:48) more fun with nonsense lyrics 2:17
- 9. The Cinema Show
Rehearsals (0:00-1:08) [chat] < sudden start, nonsense lyrics, music is quiet,
then there are noises like someone is moving the microphone to a better position
to record the band, and quality becomes better at 0:33, band start to talk
as they play then at 1:03 > < sudden cut to 0:05 guitar ending a song, no
idea if it is Cinema Show 1:08 (both parts)
