28th March 1980 - Duke - Genesis 12 (23)

With a new decade came a new sound, brighter and as powerful as what had gone before; this was Genesis, the band were out to prove that they were not outdated 'rock dinosaurs and what they came up with proved without doubt that the Mike, Phil and Tony could still cut it. The music and sleeve design still seems fresh over 28 years later

February 1981- Face Value - Collins, Phil 1 (27)

That Phil went through an emotional upheaval prior to this album is well documented and with Genesis being on hold Phil used music as a way of keeping himself busy and also as a vent for his emotions, indeed he, at the time he didn't forsee a release for his recordings they were so personal.

Genesis fans bought the album home and liked the darker songs like In The Air Tonight, and their wives liked the softer love songs, they told their friends and they bought the album. To sum up, Phil had started to catch the imagination of the general public.

September 1981 - Abacab - Genesis 13 (30)

Genesis needed a place to record, a place to call 'home', they needed somewhere that they could record ideas the instant they thought of them, the solution? 'The Farm' studio at Fisher Lane Farm in Surrey England was the answer, this studio made it possible for the band to break with the past and to develop new material from long jamming sessions together, something that was not possible to do before as the band usually had to have well developed ideas already written down and ready to go before booking expensive studio time somewhere in the world. These recordings also marked a kind of watershed for some as older fans decided the 'new' Genesis wasn't to their taste, but the band themselves were fired up and excited at this new direction.

Issued on CD in May 1983, again in March 1991. Definitive Edition Remaster released 4th October 1994. Japanese edition issued 199?

September 1982 - Acting Very Strange - Rutherford, Mike 2 (34)

If you were to listen to this album after hearing Mikes first solo effort you would scarcely recognise it as the same artiste, here you will find a very 'poppy' style with vocals by Mr Rutherford himself, the songs are short, sharp and intense, some would say that Mike was indeed 'Acting Very Strange'

Re-issued in the US on CD 19?? A UK re-release on CD was talked about in late 2002 and 2003 but not realised.

Atlantic 80015-2

2nd October 1982 - Genesis 'Six of the Best' reunion concert featuring Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Micheal Rutherford, Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson. Earlier Peter had pioneered the first W.O.M.A.D. Festival, it was a artistic success but a financial failure and concert was deemed a good way of getting Peter and WOMAD back into the black.

This is one of two albums (Anthony Phillips Harvest of the Heart is the other) that have not seen an official CD release, it is only available to my knowledge on vinyl. An official CD version was talked about in 2003 but nothing came of it.

May 1983 - Plays Live (d) + Plays Live Highlights - Gabriel, Peter 5 (38)

Recorded Autumn 1982 in the 'Mid West' US and Canada and 'Fix 'n' Mix' in Bath, UK Spring 1983. By his own admission Peter was guilty of 'cheating', ever the perfectionist he took the 1982 tour recordings and re-recorded parts of it to his own taste before its release. This concert also appeared as a 1 CD 'highlights' album

October 1983 - Genesis - Genesis 15 (40)

If I'm not mistaken this album was the first album from the band to be released on CD, vinyl and cassette upon it's first release date. Now with the Virgin label in the UK. The single Mama was a big hit in the UK and really stood out amongst the 'new wave' pop songs in the singles chart. This album has not so far benefited from a remaster although 'Mama' (in an edited version) and 'That's All' appear on the 1999 album 'Turn It On Again The Hits' in a superior remastered form

Issued on CD October 1983 and again in July 1987

March 1984 - Invisible Men - Phillips, Anthony 8 (42)

This album features a political angle due to the 1982 Falklands war between Argentina and Great Britain, (during which an Exocet missile struck an English warship and killed 20 crew) because of this an Argentine musician friend of Ant's (Guillermo Cazenave?) had to leave England, the track 'Exocet' (and 'The Women Were Watching') illustrate Anthonys anger over the conflict and how it affected his friend. The ending of 'Exocet'; featuring a fragment of a Falklands war report was actually a recording error but Ant kept it in, it makes a dramatic impression even now. Indeed Exocet was deemed a little too political even to be on the original issue of the album.

March 1985 - Birdy Original Soundtrack - Gabriel, Peter 6 (47)

Peter had been looking to do a soundtrack score since (at least) before 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' and he got his chance here, the film was a moderate success both commercially and artistically.

Although most, if not all the material featured here featured existing reworked tracks, it gives nothing away in terms of power and emotion.

September 1985 - Harvest Of The Heart (vinyl only) - Phillips, Anthony 11 (48)

This remains one of two albums (Tony Banks The Wicked Lady Soundtrack is the other) in the Genesis and Solo canon that has not currently been, or is not likely to be released on an official release CD, that is why I have shown it in it's vinyl form, the artwork draws from the first four Private Parts And Pieces albums (as does the track listing), the 2 bonus tracks - Trail Of Tears and Erotic Strings have since been released on CD as extra tracks

Cherry Red BRED66 (vinyl)

November 1985 - Mike & The Mechanics - Mike & The Mechanics 1 (49)

After one critically well received and one largely ignored album Mike decided on a different tack, he gathered a band together and named them 'The Mechanics', Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground) was used in a film and the single was a big hit and launched Mike and The Mechanics into the public conciess.

It's a little know fact that Tony wrote a soundtrack score for the film 2001, ultimately his effort were rejected by the film makers - but Tony didn't give up, he wrote more pieces for film and presented a selection here (Although not his 2001 score). Guests include Jim Diamond, Toyah Willcox and Fish

It seems that Peter was being hassled by his record company to release a more 'poppy' record and Peter obliged with an album that propelled him into the pubic consciousness with songs like Sledgehammer, these tracks particularly appealed to American audiences.

Peter had already proved that he had the courage of his convictions to do just what he wanted, so when he was asked to score the soundtrack for the controversial film 'The Last Temptation Of Christ' by Martin Scorsese I think there is little doubt he took on the project with no hesitation, and certainly with no thought that it might spoil his image as a 'pop star', certainly anyone who bought this record after buying his 'So' album was certainly in for a shock

14th August 1989 - Bankstatement - Banks, Tony 5 (61)

Phil, Mike and Peter were doing well at this point and receiving a lot of airplay in their own right, Genesis were also enjoying more popularity than ever before, and now Tony, after a long gap (since his last 'proper' album in June 1983) was ready to grab some of the limelight; he chose to form a band, much like Mike had done and hide his identity to a certain extent.

17th November 1989 - ...But Seriously - Collins, Phil 5 (62)

If Phils music was notable before, this album sent him into another dimension, he quite simply became the voice of the era, and that voice carried a long way, one song was adopted by a charity and bought more awareness and funds to their cause than years of work beforehand. Here was a star that, even though he was a very rich man, was still prepared to work hard and put himself out to help others who were not as fortunate as himself. Despite the 'serious' messages given out by this album there was more than enough upbeat tracks to stop any feeling of despondency creeping in, meanwhile Phils already busy diary was about to go into overload.
